Master Nurtures Traditional Art

Sun Dashi, originally named Sun Ying, was born in Gaotang County of Shandong Province in 1919. A master of traditional Chinese landscape painting, he is now a member of the Chinese Traditional Painting Research Institute and the executive council of the Chinese Artists Association, according to China Daily.

Known for his deep understanding of traditional Chinese painting and his innovative ideas when it comes to his own work, he had an important position in art circles in Taiwan before he moved to the United States in the late 1960s.

Sun returned to the Chinese mainland in 1982, when the art world was going through an active but somewhat chaotic stage with various new forms and styles. With the tide of new art movements, many middle-aged and elderly artists felt perplexed. However, Sun kept his feet on the ground and continued with his freehand brushwork, for which he has been acknowledged as a master.

A few years after Sun's return, he held a solo exhibition of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy in the China National Art Museum.

Sun has raised funds to build a Sun Dashi Art Museum and a Sun Dashi Hope School.
