Newspapers Celebrate 1st Birthday of Macao SAR

Local newspapers carried articles on Wednesday, December 20 to celebrate the first anniversary of the founding of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).

Guided by Deng Xiaoping's great concept of "one country, two systems," the Macao SAR has carried out well the principles of "Macao people governing Macao" and a high degree of autonomy in Macao, the Macao Daily News said in an editorial.

"Macao people have become the masters of their own affairs and have worked hard together to score very encouraging achievements this year," the paper said.

It noted that the central government has abided by the Macao Basic Law and has not intervened in the internal affairs of the SAR.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin came to Macao to attend the first-anniversary celebrations and this shows the support of the central government, the newspaper said.

The newspaper Va Kio said in a signed commentary that the Macao SAR enjoys a special status in the country for it is the last piece of land where colonial rule was put to an end and it is the second place in China implementing the principle of "one country, two systems" after the Hong Kong SAR.

With the concerted efforts of both the government and local residents, Macao has seen improving public security, booming tourism and a recovering economy, the newspaper said.

The Jornal San Wa Ou commented that the past year has been a test to the central government's sincerity in implementing the "one country two systems" principle and the local officials' governing competence.

Over the past year, the residents in the Macao SAR have felt the sincerity of the central government and seen the achievements of the SAR government, the newspaper said.
