Standardization Research Institute Established in Shanghai

A standardization research institute was formally set up in Shanghai on December 18 in order to quicken the pace of bringing the city's standardization work in line with international practice and adapting to the new situation emerged after China's entry into the WTO.

This institute will conduct structural reform of the original Shanghai Technology Supervision and Information Research Institute. The focus of its work will be placed on studying the European, American and Japanese market access system, and a follow-up study of the development trend related to the procedures for the appraisal of its technological regulations, standard and qualification, the establishment of a relevant database, and striving to break the trade and technological barriers set up by developed countries.

Meanwhile, efforts will be stepped up to change compulsory local standard into local technology statute, local technological regulations will be drafted to specifically deal with products that involve safety, hygiene, environment and resources protection, and protection of the city's young industries will also be strengthened.

The institute has reportedly set up WTO/TBT consulting centers in various provinces and cities and has collected over 300,000 types of standards, such as ISO and ICE and other international standards, advanced standards of the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Britain, Russia and other countries, as well as State standard, trade standard, local standard and huge amounts of enterprise standards.
