Guangdong Reports Fewer Smuggling CasesGuangdong Province dealt with 7,978 smuggling cases in the first ten months of this year, 6.7 percent less than that in the same period last year.The figure was announced by Tang Bingquan, vice governor of Guangdong Province. While addressing a provincial meeting on anti- smuggling work on Monday, Tang said that the smuggling cases involved 1.97 billion yuan (some US$237.6 million), a decrease of 11.2 percent. The decrease in the number of smuggling cases was attributed to the organization of a range of provincial or trans-regional joint actions in the province to combat smuggling. Tang said that the work of anti-smuggling officers were kept under tight control as the value of major traditional smuggling commodities like finished oil, edible oil, raw chemical fiber, raw chemicals, rolled steel, motorcycles and cigarettes decreased in the past months. It has been learnt that the province will organize new joint anti-smuggling operation in the near future to prevent smuggling along the south Chinese coast around New Year's Day and the traditional Chinese Spring Festival which falls on January 24 next year. |
