Premier: China to Seek Opportunities for Faster Economic Growth

Premier Zhu Rongji said Tuesday, December 19, that China will seek opportunities for a faster economic growth in the year of 2001.

Speaking at a meeting attended by officials from the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of Communist Party of China, Party School of the CPC Central Committee, General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and other departments, the premier said China will push ahead with reform and development while managing to maintain social stability.

Zhu Rongji said China will further stimulate domestic demand and adopt a pro-active fiscal policy and a stable monetary policy.

He stressed that the year of 2001 will be the first year in the new millennium for China to implement the country's 10th Five-Year Plan (2001 to 2005). It is a crucial year for China to maintain an upbeat growth momentum and at the same time for deepening restructure reform and opening wider to the outside world, he said.

China's national economy has witnessed an important and favorable turn this year which indicates that China had overcome difficulties brought about by the Asian financial crisis, he said
