Xinjiang's Imports & Exports Top US$2 Bn

It is learnt from Urumqi Customs that Xinjiang's foreign economic and trade business has undergone extraordinary development this year, with the import and export value exceeding US$2 billion for the first time..

Statistics show that by the end of November, Xinjiang's total import and export volume had reached US$2.08 billion, an increase of US$480 million, or upward of 30 percent over the same period last year.

Of the total, exports came to US$1.13 billion, up by 45 percent over the same period last year; and imports, to US$0.96 billion, by 40 percent, registering a trade surplus of US$0.17 billion.

Foreign trade analysts maintain that the continued rapid growth momentum of Xinjiang's export and import trade and the maintenance of fast increase in ordinary trade created favorable conditions for the stable increase of local foreign exchange earnings through export.

By the end of November, the import and export volume of general trade had reached US$770 million. State-owned, collective and private enterprises all recorded a fairly rapid growth of import and export trade.

Meanwhile, Xinjiang had seen a decline in the export growth rate of small volume border trade and an extra high-speed growth in imports. Statistics of the first 11 months show that the proportion of border trade to the gross import and export volume had reached 58 percent. Border trade has thus become an indispensable advantage for Xinjiang to open wider to the outside world and develop an export-oriented economy. At the same times, the import of Xinjiang's processing trade also showed an upward trend.

It is reported that at the Alataw Pass trading port, the westernmost railway port in the Chinese section of the Euraisa continental bridge, the freight volume handled by this port through international coordinated transport has topped 4 million tons for the first time, setting the highest record since this station went into operation and becoming one among the country's railway ports, that handles the largest import and export freight volume for four consecutive years.
