Remarkable Progress Made in Military Products for Civilian UseWith a rapid development in the past 20 years since reform and opening up, China has made remarkable progress in transferring military products to civilian use, according to sources from the 2nd Conference for the Peaceful Use of Military Technology.Currently, more than half of the national defense and military personnel are engaged in providing goods and services to civilians. Those employed in the military industries have developed thousands of products for civilian use, which has greatly prompted the development of the national economy as a whole. The output value of civilian products comes to 80 percent of the total value of China's national defense and military industries. In the past 20 years, China has scored considerable achievements in remolding the five major military industries: nuclear industry, spaceflight, aviation, shipping and weaponry. The operation of nuclear power stations at Qinshan and Daya Bay has ushered in the new era of China's peaceful use of atomic energy. The entry by China's Long March carrier rocket into the world satellite launching market, the application of satellite technology in the fields of communications, meteorology and resource-surveying have shown to the world China's comprehensive strength in aerospace technology. The output of ship-building by military enterprises takes up half that of the country's total with its export-value accounting for 70 percent of the country's total, and is playing a big role in China's vessel import and export trade. Besides, China has exported nearly 100 homemade Yun-12 airplanes, and the self-developed Xinzhou 60 passenger aircraft has also won a great favor in the aviation market. All these indicate that China has come to the fore in the aviation manufacturing technology. As released at the 2nd Conference for the Peaceful Use of Military Technology, technologies of nuclear energy, space, spaceflight, shipbuilding, detonation materials and chemical engineering as well as photoelectric and other advanced technologies have been widely applied in all industries turning out things for civil use in China.
