Bush Receives Enough Electoral Votes to Take Presidency
Nevada will go into the history books by casting its four Electoral College votes for Republican George W. Bush, pushing him one vote over the bare minimum needed to become the 43rd president of the United States. The tally is now 271 to 260 in Bush's favor.
Despite attempts by both Republicans and Democrats to sway electors from one side to the other, 271 of the nation's 538 electors cast their votes for Bush. Three states have yet to cast votes, but those are expected to all go to Democrat Al Gore.
Members of the Electoral College remained true to their party pledges Monday, with the exception of one District of Columbia elector who left her ballot blank.
One of the District of Columbia's three electors, Barbara Lett-Simmons, wrote next to her name that she intentionally left her ballot blank as a protest against the district's lack of congressional representation.
After the voting in each state, the official certificates will be sent to Congress to be counted on January 6.
