India, Jordan Sign MoU

India and Jordan signed in New Delhi on Monday a Memorandum of Understanding which provides for periodical consultations between foreign ministers of the two countries, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

"This will reflect the strength of the relations the two countries have," visiting Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdel Elah Mohammad Khatib was quoted as saying after the signing of the document.

Khatib, who is on a day-long visit, called on Indian Vice President Krishan Kant, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and held "intensive parleys" with Indian External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh on Monday.

Asked to comment on the alleged remarks by Colin Powell, who will be new U.S. secretary of state under the Bush administration, that sanctions against Iraq should be intensified, Khatib said that Jordan had always supported compliance with United Nations- sponsored sanctions against Iraq, but "at the same time we want to see that it does not come at the expense of suffering of the Iraqi people."

Khatib also expressed confidence of a forward movement in the Middle East peace process, saying that Jordan would make concerted efforts, including working closely with the new U.S. administration under George Bush, for early resumption of the peace talks, the PTI reported.
