Eritrea Hails Peace Agreement with Ethiopia

The Eritrean government Monday hailed the comprehensive peace agreement signed with Ethiopia last week as "a profound achievement".

The agreement represents "a crucial building block towards comprehensive peace and development in the sub-region in particular, and in the whole African continent in general", said a statement from the Eritrean Foreign Ministry.

However, the statement also stressed that a just and fair implementation of the agreement requires the full cooperation of the two parties and the active commitment of the international community.

Eritrea remains committed to cooperating towards the successful implementation of the agreement with an open and constructive spirit, according to the statement.

The statement also reaffirms Eritrea's desire and commitment to "forget the grievances of the past and look to a future of peace and hope between the two fraternal peoples of the two countries".

The two neighboring countries in the Horn of Africa signed the peace accord on December 12 in Algiers, Algeria, to end the two- year border war, which killed and wounded hundreds of thousands people.
