PLA Garrison Troops Resolutely Safeguarding Interests of Macao Residents: Official

The officers and soldiers of the garrison troops of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) deployed in Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) are determined to safeguard the rights and interests of Macao residents.

Major General Liu Yuejun, commander of the garrison troops, made the remark during an interview with Chinese correspondents Sunday, December 17.

Liu said, the garrison troops have performed their duties of defense effectively since being deployed in Macao a year ago, and have received wide praise from the Macao people.

According to Liu, last year, more than 100 soldiers of the garrison troops gave up the chance to sign up for the entrance examination of military universities, to fulfill their duties of defense in Macao.

This year, Liu said, many soldiers have postponed their retirement in order to guarantee the smooth operation of the celebrations marking the first anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland.

The commander said that the troops have made a full and accurate survey of the landforms of Macao, and worked out schemes to safeguard against possible wars or emergencies.

Liu said, soldiers of the garrison troops have also learnt scientific and technological knowledge and various skills. The soldiers scored highly for all programs during an exam conducted by the Guangzhou Military Area Command in September, Liu said.

The commander said that the garrison troops have strictly adhered to the principle of running the armed forces in accordance with the law and encouraged officers and soldiers to learn Macao Basic Law, Garrison Law and various laws of Macao SAR.
