Employee Salaries in HK Rise This Year, Survey

Economic success in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland this year had a positive impact on salary increases of employees, according to a survey released Monday, December 18, by a global consulting firm.

The consulting company, Hewitt Associates, survey 110 companies in Hong Kong, including foreign and locally owned, about compensation practices across five employee groups.

The results indicated that employees in Hong Kong realized average salary increases ranging from 2.7 percent to 3.8 percent this year, with manual employees receiving an average increase of 2.7 percent compared to the 3.8 percent average increase granted to senior management executives.

In the mainland's large cities, employees received even larger percentage increases, the survey said. For instance, base salary increases for manual workers in Beijing averaged 6.5 percent, Shanghai 6.3 percent and Guangzhou 5.2 percent, while top management received an average of 7.8 percent, 9.4 percent and 8.3 percent, respectively.
