China to Hold First International Music Contest Named after Individual

Preparations for an international vocal music contest named after Shen Xiang, the late famous Chinese singer and vocal educator, is well under way.

The vocal contest is the first of its kind to be held in China. In the domestic qualification contest, all the participants were required to sing 11 songs in four languages. After three rounds of qualification contests, 23 vocalists came through to the final from among 167 participants from across China. They will take part in the contest with foreign participants after further training.

According to judges, Chinese singers have demonstrated greater improvements in singing skills and understanding of original works.

This international vocal contest, to be sponsored jointly by the China Musicians Association and the China Central Music Academy, will be held in Beijing next year.

The contest committee will invite singers from 30 countries and regions.
