Tanzania, Uganda Conclude Border Dispute

Tanzania and Uganda have successfully solved their border dispute left over by a war in late 1970s as re-demarcation by experts from both countries came to an end.

Spokesman for Tanzanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Charles Mwakangata told Xinhua here on Monday that his country is satisfied with the outcome of the re- demarcation.

"The problem was caused by the Ugandans and now it's up to them to make corrections," said Mwakangata in reaction to a report on the border issue by the EastAfrican weekly.

The weekly newspaper last weekend said the Ugandan government has given up a territorial claim to a contentious strip of land on the common border with Tanzania after experts proved that the pillars demarcating the two countries are actually inside Tanzania.

The experts from both countries reached the conclusion using the highly accurate satellite-based global positioning system technology.

Ugandan Minister of State for Lands, Water and Communication Baguma Isoke said last week that as a result of the survey, Uganda has now shifted the pillars of the border, a 100-kilometer straight line, from where they were to new positions 300 meters into Uganda.

The border issue has been a long-stranding dispute which Tanzania claims started after the Ugandan government troops invaded Tanzania in 1978.
