Tsang Yam-pui Appointed HK Commissioner of Police

Tsang Yam-pui will succeed Hui Ki-on to be Hong Kong Commissioner of Police with effect from January 2, 2001, according to an official announcement made Monday, December 18.

"The Central People's Government has, on the nomination and recommendation of the Chief Executive, appointed Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr. Tsang Yam-pui as Commissioner of Police with effect from January 2, 2001," said the announcement of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government.

Hui Ki-on, who has served in the Hong Kong Police Force for 38 years, with the last seven years as commissioner of police, will proceed on pre-retirement leave with effect from the same date.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa expressed full confidence in 54-year-old Tsang, saying "Mr. Tsang Yam-pui has served in the Hong Kong Police for nearly 35 years and has an extensive and deep understanding of the work of the Police Force."

"Over the years, Mr. Tsang has promoted the use of modern management in the Police Force which has enabled it to become a highly disciplined, efficient and professional law enforcement force," Tung said.

Tsang is best known for his service as Head of the Narcotics Bureau in the late 1980s, when record narcotics seizures were made, said the announcement.
