Business People Celebrate Anniversary of Macao SAR

The Macao Chamber of Commerce held a grand party Monday, December 18, to celebrate the first anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland and the founding of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).

Ma Man Kei, chairman of the Macao Chamber of Commerce, said that Macao's return one year ago put an end to colonial rule in Macao and it is a glorious event for the Chinese nation.

The facts over the past year have fully demonstrated that the principles of "one country, two systems", "Macao people governing Macao" and a high degree of autonomy in the SAR are a fundamental guarantee for Macao's long-term stability and prosperity, he said.

He noted that the SAR government, led by chief executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah, has been exerting great efforts to solve the problems concerning the livelihood of residents. Public security has improved to great extent and the economy has shown signs of recovery.

"The normal operation of administrative, legislative and judicial organs of the SAR shows that Macao people have the wisdom and competence of governing Macao well," Ma Man Kei said.

Wang Qiren, director of the Liaison Office of central government in the Macao SAR, and Yuan Tao, commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the SAR, attended the party.
