3,700 Congolese Soldiers Placed Under Heavy Guard in Zambia

Zambian troops have placed 3, 700 disarmed Congolese soldiers under heavy guard in four Nchelenge schools in Zambia's Northern Province as tension and insecurity mounted among residents there, Times of Zambia newspaper reported Monday, December 18.

Their heavy military hardware which include rocket propelled grenades, anti-tank grenades and machine guns have been stashed in one place and a combined team of Zambia Army and Zambia National Service officers are guarding the equipment, the newspaper said.

This was announced when Joint Military Council chairman Timothy Kazembe led a 10-man team of senior army officers on a verification mission to the northern frontier with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The pro-Laurent Kabila soldiers were disarmed after several days of resistance. They fled the battle field following an exacerbated offensive on the government soldiers by rebels.

The residents in Nchelenge have expressed serious concern at the presence of DRC military men in this small fishing border town.
