Sarovic Sworn In as President of Bosnia's Serb RepublicMirko Sarovic, leader of the Serb Democratic Party (SDP), was sworn in Saturday as new president of the Serb Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Republika Srpska) at the first session of the republic's newly-elected National ssembly, Yugoslavia's Tanjug news agency reported.In his inaugural speech, Sarovic said that his new government will continuously carry out the 1995 Dayton Agreement, which ended the 1992-1995 Bosnian war and divided Bosnia into two entities -- Republika Srpska and the Muslim-Croat Federation. Sarovic, 45, pledged to improve relations with the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina, composed of the two entities, and strengthen contacts between his government departments and their counterparts of the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina. Sarovic also said his government will continue making greater efforts to maintain Republika Srpska's special relations with Yugoslavia. At the same meeting, Dragan Kalinic, head of the SDP, was elected chairman of the National Assembly while Zoran Djeric of the Democratic Party and Sulejman Tihic of the Party of Democratic Action were elected vice chairmen. Sarovic has yet to name the prime minister of his government. Under the republic's constitution, Sarovic should nominate a candidate for the prime ministerial post within 10 days of his inauguration. |
