Colombian Police Capture Chief of Drug Cartel

Colombian police cooperating with the United States have captured Jorge Alberto Arcila Villa, whom they believed to be head of communications of Colombia's drug cartel "New Generation," in northwest Colombia, the authorities said Saturday.

Alfredo Rodriguez Perez, director of Judicial Police, said the arrest of the 41-year-old Arcila Villa, nicknamed "El Flaco," is a result of an investigation carried out in the U.S. and Colombia since October 31, when 49 suspected members of a drug dealing group were arrested.

Arcila Villa, busted in the municipality of Envigado close to Medellin, is accused of drug smuggling and money laundering.

The Colombian government is carrying out Plan Colombia against drug trade in the country, under which the United States will provide Colombia with 1.3 billion U.S. dollars worth of assistance and military equipment.
