Panama Canal Bridge Designer to Be Announced Soon

Panamanian authorities said on Saturday, December 16, that they will announce in upcoming days the name of the company that won the contest to design a second bridge over the Panama Canal.

Minister of Public Works Victor Juliao said that the competing companies presented 2 to 5 million U.S. dollars bids, but the bidder offering the lowest price will not necessarily be the winner.

About 20 companies participated in the bidding and the finalists were Cowi-Consulting Engineers and Planners As from Denmark, Figg Engineering of the United States in association with a group of Panamanian entrepreneurs, and TY Lin-Louis Berger Group, also from the United States.

Figg Engineering presented a 5.8 million dollars bid, much higher than the bids of 3.1 million dollars and 2.7 million dollars offered by Cowi-Consulting and TY respectively.

Juliao said the government considers a 100 million dollars investment in the construction of the bridge in the Paraiso sector of the Canal, 15 kilometers north of the entrance to the Pacific Ocean.

The bridge will be one kilometer long, with six lanes, a walkway and a height above the water level of 90 meters.

The project will begin next June and its inauguration is set on November 3, 2003 to mark the 100th anniversary of the independence of Panama from Colombia.
