Crystal Production Center Operates in W. China

Mianyang City, in southwest China's Sichuan Province, is expected to become China's largest artificial crystal production base with the recent start of a new crystal production center.

The first phase of the production center is to produce 200 tons of artificial crystal a year. When the second phase of the project operates in May 2001, the annual output will be doubled.

The production center was built by the Zhejiang-based Crystal Electronic Co. Ltd., the largest crystal manufacturer in China. It has 10 subsidiary companies in China.

It indicates that the crystal production has shifted from eastern to western China as part of China's efforts to optimize resources.

Outlining major reasons for building a crystal production center in Mianyang, Zheng Shousong, a leading official of the Crystal Electronic Co. Ltd., said "Western China has ample power and labor resources, which are ideal for crystal production, a labor intensive and high energy consuming trade."
