Seven Killed, Two Missing in Chain Bridge BreakingA chain bridge broke apart Friday claiming the lives of seven people in Nanchong of southwest China's Sichuan Province. Two people were still missing by press time. The bridge is located in Liuya Town, Yilong County of Nanchong City. The tragedy happened when villager Deng Xuejian sent a party to escort the bride of his son to Deng's house. The 64-meter-long and two-meter-wide bridge broke suddenly and 20 people from the group fell into the water. The initial reasons for the accident were that the anchor block of the bridge, which was inserted into rocks, had been worn down and its capability of stretching the length of the bridge was degraded. The bridge was floored with cement and people caused resonance effects while stepping on the bridge all together in their carrying marriage dowry. The cause is under further investigation and the police is searching for the people who are still missing. |
