Romania: Speaker of Chamber of Deputies Is Elected

Valer Dorneanu, deputy of the Party of Social Democracy on Friday was elected speaker of the Chamber of Deputies in the new Parliament of Romania.

In his first speech as speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Dorneanu said that he intends to give back the parliament the trust and hope "it had largely lost," so as to enable this institution to win back its place as the supreme representative organism and the only law-making authority.

The 56-year-old speaker subsequently told the press that, although over the last ten years the Parliament has been the main political factor of the country and changed the legal system, it has lost much of its credibility because of a certain lack of correlation with the government and a slow legislative activity.

At the same time, he said, another objective of the Chamber of Deputies is to change its regulations so as to improve the legislative process.

Dorneanu said he would establish legislative priorities in collaboration with the government.

Dorneanu was minister for relation with the Parliament in the Nicolae Vacaroiu government (1992-1996).

Romania held the Parliamentary Elections on November 26.
