Developing Trends in China's Catering Trade

The catering trade in China is expected to rake in a record turnover of 380 billion yuan (about US$45.78 billion) this year, an increase of 19 percent from last year.

According to analysts at sinoprojects.com, the catering industry will develop in the following directions next year:

-- Fierce competition will continue. Some below par restaurants and bars will close down while others will be expanded or further improved.

-- Markets will continue to witness an across-the-board growth in China. More and more holiday-makers and families will dine out.

Development will be expedited for new varieties of food and drinks, said sinoprojects.com, a leading website on investment projects in China.

-- New operational and management methods will be introduced as well as new brand names. This trade will undergo changes from all kinds of food and beverages to brands names, from quantity and from household businesses to scale operations.

-- The catering sector will also be transformed into a modernized catering industry. Traditional catering units are run on a household basis and serve only hand-prepared food and dishes.

With growing demands and a fast-growing market, the old fashioned catering units will be enlarged with foreign investment and modern utensils and will operate according to international standards.

-- Management skills and human resources will play an increasingly important role in the industry. Skills are not adequate for preparing food. Talented people with modern management skills and knowledge are required to run and develop traditional catering work units in line with international standards.
