ROK Wants Third Reunion of Separated Families Before the Lunar New Year

At ministerial-level talks in Pyongyang, the ROK government proposed that the delayed third reunion of separated families be held before the lunar new year on Jan. 24, according to reports from the DPRK capital.

The North did not react immediately to the proposal by Unification Minister Park Jae-kyu.

Although two reunions this year enabled 400 people to meet their long-lost relatives, frustration arose as there are millions of people who have relatives across the border. Reunions are one of the most crucial inter-Korean projects since many people who hope to see their relatives are aged.

Although North and South Korea agreed in June to set up the permanent meeting point, they are reportedly divided on the place. While the South wants the meeting point in the truce village of Panmunjom, the North wants it to be set up on Mt. Kumgang in its territory.
