Sewage Expansion Project Built in Lanzhou

Construction on the expansion of Yan'erwan Sewage Disposal Project began recently in Lanzhou, capital of northwest China's Gansu Province, to reduce pollution on the Yellow River, the second longest river of the country.

The expansion project is to cost 48 million yuan. When the project is completed by the end of 2001, it will process an additional 60,000 tons of waste water daily before the water enters into the river.

Because the Yellow River runs through the city of Lanzhou, at least 400,000 tons of sewage was discharged into the river each day. Only half of the waste water was processed before being discharged.

The government of Lanzhou will build more sewage treatment facilities in other cities over the next few years to prevent the deterioration of water resources in the Yellow River.
