China's Self-designed Open Coal Mine Becomes Operational

The Anjialing open coal mine in north China's Shanxi Province, the first coal mine of its kind constructed and managed by China itself, has gone into operation recently.

The coal mine, located in the Pingshuo coal field, more than 20 kilometers away northwest of Shuozhou City, can produce 15 million tons of coal annually.

It took China less than three years to complete this massive project, costing 4.8 billion yuan (US$582 million).

The Pingshuo coal field now has two open coal mines. Another one is Antaibao open coal mine, a Sino-US joint venture, which went into operation in 1987. The mine can produce 150 million tons of coal per year.
