China's Liaoning Controls Its Sea Pollution

The once serious coastal water pollution problem off northeast China's Liaoning Province is now under control, according to an official source.

According to the Liaoning Provincial Department of Sea and Fishery, the water quality of the province's coastal water has been largely improved, and the polluted water masses in the Dalian Bay and other coastal areas have disappeared.

Having nearly 3,000 kilometers of coastline and as one of the country's most important heavy industrial bases, Liaoning use to have serious coastal waster pollution problems.

In order to control the pollution, Liaoning set up a special sea-cleaning fund several years ago and has closed down a number of businesses that are heavy polluters.

The province has also invested some two billion yuan (about 240 million U.S. dollars) in sewage disposal projects in its major cities, Shenyang and Fushun.

In Dalian, a coastal tourism city in Liaoning, 1.8 billion yuan(about 216 million U.S. dollars) has been invested in some 80 water cleaning projects. In addition, the city also has closed some 20 enterprises for pollution control purposes.
