Lucent Wins US$8M Optical Networking Deal with Shandong TelecomLucent Technologies has signed a US$8 million contract with China's Shandong Telecom -- a subsidiary of China Telecom -- for Lucent's optical networking products. These products will greatly increase the capacity of the provincial networks of China's Shandong Province and enable the company to offer new bandwidth-intensive data services to its customers. Lucent will supply its WaveStar TDM 10G (STM-64/OC-192) -- a synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) system that uses a single laser to transmit 10 Gbps. That's the equivalent of transmitting approximately 2 million one-page emails per second. Lucent's TDM 10G can be deployed as a stand-alone system or feed into a multi-channel dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) system, such as Lucent's WaveStar OLS 400G. The WaveStar OLS 400G, which also is part of this deal, is a high-capacity DWDM system that can transmit up to 400 Gbps on a single fiber. That's the equivalent of transmitting 5 million simultaneous phone calls per second. Lucent also will provide Shandong Telecom with its WaveStar ADM 16/1 multiplexers and network management systems, including Lucent's Integrated Transport Management sub -- network controller (ITM--SC), and its subnetwork management system (SNMS). These products will help Shandong Telecom manage the increased bandwidth in its networks. In addition to this latest win with Shandong Telecom, Lucent signed two contracts with the customer earlier this year. Under the contracts, Lucent has provided Shandong Telecom with its WaveStar DACS 4/4/1, a high--capacity SDH digital cross connect system. Lucent also has supplied its WaveStar OLS 400G system to Shandong Unicom provincial network, one of the subsidiaries of China Unicom. Together, the three contracts are worth more than US$20 million.
