Beijing Police Chief Asks Joint Efforts to Reduce Juvenile Crimes
Qiang Wei, a Beijing official, called December 14 for joint efforts from the family, school, and community to prevent and reduce crimes committed by juveniles.
Qiang, secretary of the Beijing Municipal Committee of Political Science and Law, noted that juveniles have continued to become the main suspects involved in various crimes in Beijing and the crimes tend to be in groups, using violent methods. Students between 14 and 16 years of age are increasingly violating the law.
"We should fully recognize the importance of preventing and reducing crimes committed by juveniles," said Qiang, who is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).
He asked to popularize family education training by running parent training schools. Schools are required to educate students not to commit crimes nor be violated by others. The communities will provide appropriate places for the healthy activities of juveniles.
Beijing has decided to establish at least one place where juveniles can gain access to knowledge about the law in all its districts. All the stadiums and cultural centers in Beijing are required to extend their time open for the students.
Beijing currently has over 2.8 million young people under the age of 25, and 1.7 million of whom are students.
