China's Railway Lines Reach 68,000 Km
China's railway lines increased by 6,000 km over the last five years to reach 68,000 km by the end of 2000, a spokesman of the Ministry of Railway said Friday, December 15.
In the last five years, China has invested 246 billion yuan in the construction of 5,700 km of new lines, 4,100 km of dual lines and the electrifying of 4,300 km of existing lines, spokesman Ren Xigui said at a press conference held by the Information Office of the State Council.
Sector Reports 109.6 Billion Yuan in Income
The railway sector is expecting an income of 109.6 billion yuan (about US$13.3 billion) from its cargo and passenger transport businesses this year, up 9.6 percent from last year, the spokesman said.
The whole sector met its 2000 income target of 103 billion yuan 22 days earlier on December 9.
Ren estimated that the sector will meet its target of 500 million yuan in profit.
