Beijing Reception Marks UNHCR Anniversary

China's Foreign Ministry and representative office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Beijing held a reception December 14 evening to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of UNHCR.

Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui said at the reception that UNHCR has become an important agency providing international protection and material assistance to refugees worldwide and facilitating their voluntary repatriation and resettlement since its establishment five decades ago.

He said that as a contracting party to the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, China has attached great importance to the work concerning refugees, and actively participated in the humanitarian activities to help refugees. China has also established and maintained good cooperative relations with UNHCR, he added.

China will continue to strengthen friendly relations and cooperation with UNHCR and make further efforts for the early settlement of the global refugee problem, he said.

UNHCR Regional Representative Colin Mitchell spoke highly of the close cooperation between UNHCR and China over the past years.

More than 5,000 staff of UNHCR are now working in 120 countries to assist 22.3 million refugees and homeless people across the world.
