Gore to Withdraw from the Presidential Race

Bringing an end to a five-week tumultuous battle for the White House, Al Gore will withdraw from the presidential race tonight in a 9 p.m. ET(10:00 Dec.14 Beijing Time) televised speech, and George W. Bush will address the nation an hour later.

The speeches will come less than a day after the nation's highest court all but assured Bush the presidency by reversing a Florida Supreme Court decision that had ordered a recount of tens of thousands of disputed ballots.

Gore will become the fourth candidate in American history and the first since 1888 to win the popular vote but lose the presidency.
