IT to Dominate Economy of Northeast China Province

The manufacturing of electronic information products and software development will become a pillar industry in Liaoning, local officials predicted.

"We will spare no efforts to develop the IT sector during the tenth five-year plan period from 2001 to 2005," said an official from the Provincial Department of Information Industry.

"Our goal is to become one of the eight IT powers in the country," the official said.

"We will put our emphasis on such fields as computer intelligence, Internet-related technologies, software technologies, digital video technologies and multimedia technologies."

According to an official, by the end of China's tenth five-year plan period the total output of the IT sector in Liaoning will reach 150 to 200 billion yuan (US$18 to US$24 billion), three to four times the current value.
