Knotty Problem of Extracting Lithium from Saline SolvedThe scientific research project, "Experiment of producing 50 tons of lithium carbonate annually in the Dongtai salt lake lithium mine" of the Qinghai Saline Research Institute, was lately accepted after checked by the Science and Technology Department of Qinghai Province.Lithium, as a kind of important rare metal and one of the major strategic materials, has been extensively used in national defense, metallurgy resources, medicine and many other fields. Rich in lithium resources, China, esp. the western part of China, has one-third of the world reserve of lithium resources. Through this project, scientists have successfully created the new technology of extracting lithium from saline, thus solving the difficult technological problem of extracting lithium from brine with a high magnesium-lithium ratio. It's reported that with success in this experiment, a 120,000-square-meter large salt field has been built in the Dongtai Salt Lake for the first time. In the smooth operation of the salt field in the past two years, 6,600 tons of qualified intermediate products of sylvine and bittern have been produced. With this new technology, an annual production capacity of 100 tons of lithium carbonate has been formed. . Related experts are of the opinion, regarding the technology of extracting lithium from the salt lake, the technological process is simple and rational, convenient to operate; products produced with this technology are of fine quality, high purity and low cost, meeting the international lithium-salt market demand.
