Gun Battle Erupts at Busy Shopping Mall in Winnipeg, Canada

A robber and a guard exchanged gunfire outside Winnipeg's largest shopping mall, Manitoba,Canada Tuesday, sending holiday shoppers diving for cover as the bleeding robber fled through a store.

The gunbattle was sparked when the lone robber, brandishing a handgun, demanded money from an armored car guard at a CIBC bank branch outside the Polo Park Mall. Eight shots were fired before the unidentified thief, wounded and gripping a bag of cash, fled through the mall into a phone store and out a back door, leaving a trail of blood. He drove off in a stolen car.

"There is a trail of blood," police Const. Bob Johnson said. "We don"t know if he"s passed out or what"s happened to him." No other injuries occurred in the robbery. It was not revealed how much money was stolen.

Police think it could be the same man responsible for four previous robberies in Winnipeg dating back two years, including a 1999 Christmas Eve heist at a Wal-Mart in which a security guard was shot and wounded. In Tuesday"s robbery, Kelly Dodds said he was heading into the bank when he heard a gunshot. "From the time I heard the sounds to the time the guy went by me, it was 15 seconds," Dodds said.
