Canada-EU Summit to Open in Ottawa

The Canada-European Union Summit will be held in Ottawa on December 19, Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien announced Tuesday, December 12.

The meeting will be devoted to discussions of trade and investment, security and defense cooperation, as well as recent international development, according to the prime minister.

"These summits allow us to advance our bilateral agenda in key economic and political areas and to review the current international situation," he said.

Representing the European Union at the summit will be the current president of the European Council, French President Jacques Chirac, and the president of the European Commission, Romano Prodi.

Other officials attending the summit include Canadian Foreign Minister John Manley, his French counterpart Hubert Vedrine, Canadian International Trade Minister Pierre Pettigrew and Javier Solana, Secretary-General of the Council of the European Union.
