Snowstorm Hits Canada's Major Eastern Cities
A heavy snowstorm is plowing through Canada's eastern cities including Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal, causing Air Canada to cancel flights and schools to close.
In Ottawa, an overnight storm was forecast to dump a record 30 centimeters of snow by 6 a.m. Tuesday.
The capital city last braced for a record 22.4 centimeters of snow at this time of the year in 1992.
Motorists are being advised to stay off roads as much as possible and to avoid unnecessary driving, while winter on-street parking restrictions have also kicked in.
Air Canada announced late Monday that it would be canceling or delaying flights in and out of Ottawa.
In Toronto, 50 percent of Air Canada flights have been canceled since the first major snowstorm of the season descended on the city Monday morning.
The weather caused several schools and colleges in the Toronto area to close Monday night, giving some students a reprieve from scheduled exams.
Environment Canada is predicting that 20 to 50 centimeters of snow will blanket the area between southern Ontario and eastern Quebec, where Air Canada has also canceled flights in the city of Montreal.
The department said the storm is part of a low-pressure system from Colorado.
