China Mobile Negotiates 50 Percent Reduction on Trunk Rentals from China Telecom

Hong Kong-listed China Mobile (HK) Ltd is in talks with China Telecom Group, the largest fixed telecom network operator in China, for a 50 per cent rent reductions on the latter's trunks. China Mobile spent a total of HK$3.72 billion on trunk rentals in order to provide its telecom services in 1999.

Approximately 90 per cent of the trunks rented by China Mobile belong to China Telecom.

China Mobile has been upgrading its network equipment and has started to lay down its own trunks. The listed company reported a 2.6 per cent year-on-year rise in earnings per share for the first half of the year 2000.

The company's mobile phone clients reached 41 million as of the end of October, ranking second in the world following UK-based Vodafone, who is also a partner with China Mobile.
