US Supreme Court Ruling in Florida Recount Case Unlikely Monday

A US Supreme Court ruling in the presidential election case involving Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Al Gore was unlikely on Monday, December 11, court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said.

"I am going home and indications are that an opinion is unlikely tonight," Arberg told reporters.

A quick ruling was expected from the country's highest court on Bush's argument that the Florida Supreme Court unlawfully ordered recounts of votes cast across the state. A ruling for Bush could doom Gore's chances of gaining enough votes to grab Florida's 25 electoral votes which will determine the winner of the presidency.

On Monday morning, lawyers for Bush and Gore laid out their oral arguments on Florida's disputed ballot recount before the US Supreme Court justices, who appeared divided in the case that could finally decide who becomes the next president of the United States.

Last Monday, the justices set aside a previous Florida Supreme Court decision that allowed an earlier round of recounts. On Saturday, the justices voted 5-4 to stop the new Florida recount and grant quick review to Bush's appeal.
