Florida Senate Committee Approves Resolution Naming Bush Electors

A Senate committee of Florida voted 4-3 Monday, December 11, for a resolution which would name a slate of state electors loyal to Republican George W. Bush.

Earlier, a Florida House panel voted 5-2 on the similar resolution.

The full House meets Tuesday and could approve the resolution then. The Senate next meets Wednesday, although leaders there have raised the possibility of delaying a vote until the US Supreme Court decides whether to resume ballot recounts.

The country's high court heard oral arguments between the Bush and Democrat Al Gore camps in the case Monday and was expected to rule soon.

After the Florida election result was certified on November 26, giving Bush victory in the state by just 537 votes, Gore contested the result in court, seeking a partial, manual recount in counties where his lawyers contend there are enough hidden votes to overturn the result.

Both Bush and Gore need the state's 25 electoral votes to win the presidency.
