China, Germany to Hold Environmental Meeting

A conference on environmental cooperation between China and Germany will open Tuesday in Beijing.

Some 900 delegates from the two sides will attend the conference, said Zhu Guangyao, deputy director of State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA), at a press conference Monday.

Zhu said delegates at the two-day meeting will discuss such issues as protection and efficient use of natural resources, pollution control and management of the environment, urban development and environmental protection.

Since the 1980s, China has cooperated with Germany in raising the efficiency of energy utilization, garbage disposal and wastewater treatment, water supply, forestry protection, afforestation and ecological agriculture.

Speaking at the press conference, German ambassador to China Hans-Christian Ueberschaer said that apart from government-to- government cooperation in the environment sector, research centers and enterprises in the two countries need to strengthen ties.
