Iranian, Iraqi Kurds Occupy UNHCR Building, 102 Kurds Arrested

Islamabad police Tuesday fired tear gas and resorted to baton charge to flush from the building of the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR)Iranian and Iraqi Kurds, who occupied the building for two hours.

Police arrested 102 Kurds including 25 women and 10 children after the building was vacated. Several Kurds were injured after they were hit by tear gas shells and batons.

The Kurds, who had applied for refugee status, staged demonstrations in front of the UNHCR office in the afternoon, chanting slogans against the delay in accepting their applications.

Later they broke into the building while breaking the security cordon around the building and occupied the whole building.

The UNHCR officials had to call out the police, who succeeded in vacating all rooms of the building after two hours. The police fired shells inside the rooms and forced the Kurds to leave the building.

No UNHCR official was available for comment as they had left the building after it was occupied by the demonstrators.
