Chinese Hospitals to Adopt Govt. Procurement SystemBeginning 2001, major hospitals in China will implement the government procurement system in a step-by-step manner, in order to let manufacturers to compete in an open, equal and fair ground. This was disclosed by Zhao Zilin, an official from the Ministry of Health at Tuesday's briefing on the 10th China International Hospital Equipment and Facilities Exposition and Symposia, which is scheduled to be held in Beijing from September 2-5, 2001. Zhao said that China will accelerate regional planning on local medical services and step up control on medical resources and purchasing of major equipment and facilities. In addition to the government procurement, Chinese hospitals will also adopt an abolishing system for old hospital equipment that are no-longer in good operating condition, the official said. Meanwhile, hospitals in developed areas will be allowed to acquire better equipment and facilities, so as to meet the demands of local people, he noted. A local expert observed that China, a country with a population of 1.2 billion, six million medical workers and three million clinical beds, is a huge medical service market with great potential.
