Wartime Japanese Ammunition Found in Guangdong
Over 80 crates of ammunition discarded by Japanese invaders during World War II were found in the shallows near the Xijiang River in south China's Guangdong Province.
The site has been under surveillance by police.
On December 4, local residents in Changgang and Jiangchuan townships called "110", a police hotline, to report their findings of a boat wreckage and ammunition crates in the shallows.
The police soon cleared up the weapons, which included over 100 grenades, flak shells, heavy machine gun bullets and high explosive shells.
An 80-year-old native told Xinhua that over 100 Japanese soldiers were stationed in Jiangchuan during the Japanese invasion.
They fled in a flurry after Japan's surrender in 1945, loading ammunition and other cargo on three big boats. The fleeing troop abandoned the navigation route after a Chinese air attack in the river.
