The total mileage of China's expressways will reach 15,000 kilometers by the end of this year, ranking third in the world, according to the Ministry of Communications.

Beijing-Shenyang and Beijing-Shanghai expressways have been put into operation and become two major transport arteries across northeast China, north China and east China.

By the end of this year, ministry officials say, China's highways will total 1.4 million kilometers.

China has listed road construction as a top priority in its economic development plan and given a shot in the arm of the expressway building.
