Xinjiang to Become World Biggest Colored Cotton Producer

The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region has decided to expand its colored cotton growing area to 500,000mu to turn itself into world biggest production base of colored cotton, said a senior official with the region.

Xinjiang's natural conditions, such as water, light and heat, are very suitable for colored cotton growing, and a solid foundation has been laid for production of the cotton.

Since 1994, the local Tiancai Technology Co,.Ltd, in cooperation with China Cotton Research Institute and the Genetics Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has been working hard to foster and promote species of colored cotton.

Up to now, three species have been widely planted and more than 90 specimen made to select superior species and along with this an industrial chain of growing, spinning, garment making and selling has been formed.

This year's colored cotton growing area has reportedly reached about 70,000mu, with most cotton yields exported abroad, especially to developed regions as Europe, America, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Macao.
