Road Accident Claims 62 Nigerians

About 62 people were confirmed dead at the weekend in a multiple accident at Ubakala Junction near Umuahia, Abia State of eastern Nigeria.

All the passengers died on the spot when a full-occupied mini- bus traveling from Umuahia to the country's commercial capital Lagos had a head-on collision with a truck on Saturday night, reported the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday.

A Peugeot car then ran into the accident and immediately caught fire, which later engulfed all the vehicles involved in the accident and burnt the victims beyond recognition, said the report.

Governor of the Abia State Orji Kalu, who visited the scene on Sunday, expressed dismay at the number of casualties.

The deteriorating condition of the road was believed to the cause of the accident, added the report.
