Famous Mountains Approved National Geological Parks

Two famous scenic mountains in Jiangxi Province, east China, have been endorsed to be nationalgeological parks, local officials said Tuesday, December 12.

China approved the establishments of its first group of 11 such parks nationwide recently.

Lushan Mountain, one of the two mountains, is among the most popular tourist destinations in China for its wonderland-like landscape. It also boasts the world richest and best preserved glaciers of the Quaternary Period some 2.5 million years ago.

The mountain retains mixed features of glaciers and ice erosion,horst-led fault mountains, sandstone bluffs with waterfalls, and karst caves.

Work is being done for the mountain to be declared a world geological park.

Longhu Mountain, or Tiger and Dragon Mountain, in Yingtan City, rivals Lushan Mountain with its three geological and cultural

legacies: a wide variety of landforms, rich Taoist culture and amazing ancient coffins suspending on cliffs.
