League Vows to Play Bigger Role in Cross-Straits TiesThe mainland-based Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League will further its efforts in developing cross-straits relations and conducting research work in the field.The remark was made here Monday by Zhang Kehui, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and chairman of the league's central committee. In his opening address at the fourth plenary session of the sixth central committee of the league, Zhang said that it is one of the three major goals for China in the new century to accomplish reunification of the motherland . The people of Taiwan, who have a patriotic tradition, are a fundamental force in achieving the reunification goal, Zhang said. All the league's members and organizations, at different levels, should make use of all opportunities to develop cross-straits links, he noted. In the future, his league will step up exchanges with the people of Taiwan of all circles, regardless of their party affiliation, he said. The league will make greater efforts to help tourists, business people and students from Taiwan to solve their problems while they are staying in the mainland, he added. Zhang urged the league's organizations of all levels to study the developments in Taiwan and make timely proposals. At the session, the participants are scheduled to discuss and approve a work report by the standing committee of the league's central committee and study the essence of the Fifth Plenary Session of the 15th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the recently-convened national working conference on the united front. |
